Our aim is to protect and enhance the local environment by working with local communities to embrace sustainable development and biodiversity. We have a programme of events that help us work towards this throughout the year, which you are welcome to join in with.

Spring Skylarks - BOOKING CLOSED
Join Stroud Valleys Project for a dive into the wonderful world of the Skylark.
Famed for their beautiful song flight, these little brown birds have captured the imagination of poets, writers and composers for centuries. Come along, find out more about them from Project Officer Sharon Gardham, and maybe be inspired!

Pollinator Patch Planting
Join SVP at Elm Road playing field in Cashes Green (GL5 4NU) and help us to plant some pollinator patches!
There will also be activities for children and everyone will get to learn a little more about how they can support pollinators in their own green spaces.

Hawkwood May Day Festival
Join Stroud Valleys Project as we help Hawkwood’s Centre for Future Thinking to celebrate May Day in style.
Embark on a nature drawing quest with artist Tom Henderson or join SVP project officers Sharon and Tamsin to make seed balls and play ‘name the species’!
There are lots of other activities going on across the site, including talks, taster workshops, and there will be delicious local food on sale.
Entry is free, but a suggested donation of £5 to Hawkwood would be welcome.

Nailsworth Wildlife Action Group Drop-In
Do you want to support wildlife in the Nailsworth area?
Stroud Valleys Project is working with Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, the Nailsworth Climate Action Network, and Nailsworth Town Council to connect with people in and around Nailsworth who would like to take action for wildlife and support nature’s recovery.
If this sounds like something you would like to join in with, why not come along to our free drop-in session? You can meet like-minded people, become part of a community of wildlife advocates, and find out how you can take action and make a positive change.
We will be at the Mortimer Rooms in Nailsworth (GL6 0DU) adjacent to the Town Council offices on Wednesday 15 May between 6pm and 9pm. We hope to see you there!
Early Morning Birdsong
Do you often wish you could identify the birdsong you hear as you walk in the woods? Would you love to be able to tell one tweet, chirrup or cheep from another?
Join Stroud Valleys Project and birding expert Tom Griffin of the National Trust for an early morning walk at Tinkley Gate, identifying the birds we hear and see along the way. Enjoy the sights and sounds of this beautiful valley as the morning light spreads and the birds start their day.

Marking Day Celebrations
You know it’s really spring when Marking Day comes around and the cattle can start roaming Minchinhampton and Rodborough commons freely again after spending the winter on the farm.
Join Stroud Valleys Project and a host of other organisations, including the National Trust and Butterfly Conservation, for this FREE event, to help us to ‘mark’ Marking Day 2024.
There will be activities for all ages to enjoy, including walks and talks, activities, and displays – something for everyone!
Welcome Back the Swifts
Join Stroud Valleys Project and the Stroud Swift Group to welcome back the swifts to the Five Valleys!
Swifts undertake an amazing journey each year to make their way back to Stroud from Africa and their return is a great way to mark the start of spring proper!
Come along to our stand outside the eco shop in Threadneedle Street and help us celebrate their return. We will be sharing lots of swift facts as well as top tips about how you can help support swifts in your own gardens and green spaces.

Pond Dipping
Join Stroud Valleys Project during Gloucestershire County Council’s Biodiversity week to check out the wonderful underwater world of the pond.
Ponds are a vital wildlife habitat and are good for people too! Families will have a hands-on opportunity to get a closer look at the exciting variety of animals that live in our ponds. The event will take place close to Stroud town centre; full details will be emailed upon booking.
This is a FREE event, but booking is essential. Each ticket allows up to two children and two accompanying adults.
Please note that all children must be accompanied by an adult.

Seedling Swap
Do you have any spare or unwanted seedlings? Give them a good home through the Stroud Valleys Project’s seedling swap/sale. Bring along any seedlings that you have spare and exchange them for others. Both vegetable and flower varieties welcome.
Even if you don’t have any seedlings to swap, you can still take some for a donation. It’s a great way to meet other gardeners and to share advice and knowledge.

A Walk with the Blues - Butterflies of Rodborough Common
Join Butterfly Conservation and Stroud Valleys Project for a walk around Rodborough Common to see the variety of blue butterflies flying at this time of year, including (if we’re lucky!) the recently reintroduced Large Blue.

Discover the surprising history behind this rural Stroud suburb with Stuart Butler of Radical Stroud.
Sunset Skylarks and Swallows
Join Stroud Valleys Project for a guided walk on Selsley Common, to learn a little about the common’s history, how it is managed today, and about some of the species that make the common their home.
We will (all being well!) listen to the song of the skylark and see the swallows hunting for their evening meal before watching the sunset.

Bumblebee Safari
Did you know that there are more than 20 different species of Bumblebee in the UK? Want to learn more?
Then join Stroud Valleys Project and the Bumble Bee Conservation Trust on a Safari like no other – we’re on the hunt for Bumblebees!
Learn all about the different types of Bumblebee that can be found in the UK, what flowers they like and where you are most likely to find them.

A Short History of Rodborough Common
Join Stroud Valleys Project and PhD researcher Sharon Gardham for a delve into the history of Rodborough Common. Using documentary evidence and the clues left on the land itself, we will cover more than a millennium of history, exploring how Rodborough has been shaped by its past inhabitants, both human and non-human.
This event is being run in collaboration with the National Trust.

Join Project Officer Tamsin for a summer stroll along the canal and River Frome taking in the seasonal wildlife and discussing how we can encourage it into our gardens.

Scything Workshop
Join us and find out about this ancient method of mowing using the lightweight and ergonomic Austrian scythe. We will provide you with guidance in setting it up, sharpening, safety, and efficient mowing action.
Scything can be very useful for orchard management, wildflower meadows or anywhere that has long grass!
We will mow areas of a beautiful wildflower meadow site and rake up the cuttings to help in its management.
Scythes and sharpening stones provided.
Due to the nature of the workshop attendees must be over the age of 16.
'Ghost' Trees of Rodborough Common
Join Stroud Valleys Project and PhD researcher Sharon Gardham for a delve into the woodland history of Rodborough Common. In times past, Rodborough Common was part of the medieval Custom Wood, and its traces can still be seen on the Common today. As we walk, we will explore the trees of the past and look for the traces they have left on the Common of today.
This event is being run in collaboration with the National Trust.
Earthworm Wonders
Join Stroud Valleys Project for a delve into the wonderful world of earthworms!
Soil health is vital for the flourishing of all life and earthworms play a key role in promoting it. In this session, we will learn all about soil health, get top tips on composting, and will also carry out an earthworm survey, finding out more about these amazing subterranean engineers.

We will also be providing you with lots of hints and tips about how to support wildlife in your own green spaces.

Trees in the Green
Join Stroud Valleys Project and plant some trees in the Green! We will be at the Elm Road play area at Cashes Green (GL5 4NJ), planting a mixed native hedgerow and would love it if you could come along and lend a hand.
If you’d like to do your bit to help to tackle the climate crisis, whilst improving this community space for people and for wildlife this is the event for you!
As well as helping the planet and the wildlife in your local area, you will get the chance to learn about planting the right tree in the right place, giving you lots of hints and tips that you can take back to your very own green space.
No need to join us for the whole session – just give us as much time as you can between 10.30 and 12.30. All equipment will be provided, but you will need to wear weather suitable clothes, some stout footwear, and if you have them, bring along some work gloves.
No need to book.

Eco Clothes Swap
Stroud’s legendary Eco Clothes Swap returns!
Bring clean, undamaged clothes to SVP eco shop between Saturday 2 March and Friday 8 March. The eco shop is open from 10am until 4.30pm on weekdays and 9.30am until 3pm on Saturdays.
You’ll get a token for new-to-you clothes to use on the day, for FREE.
Prefer to donate clothes rather than swap? Simply drop them at the eco shop between the dates mentioned above.
Nothing to swap? No problem... just come along on Saturday 9 March and pick up some threads for a donation to our people-powered work for nature across Stroud district.

Willow Tunnel Care Day - CANCELLED
CANCELLED
Due to the forecasted strong winds and heavy rain we have had to unfortunately cancel this event.
Last year a team of ace community volunteers of all ages helped us to plant some great willow tunnels and dens in the play area at Stratford Park.
Whilst the wet summer might have been a bit disappointing for us, it was great for our willow, and it has gone wild! As such, it needs a little attention to get it back into shape for another season’s play.
We would love it if you could join Stroud Valleys Project and willow weaver Norah Kennedy to help get our willow tunnels and dens ready for the children to play in again.
Along the way, you can also learn a little bit about the benefits of trees and planting for wildlife in your own green space.

Winter Roosting Spectacle - FULLY BOOKED
Meet the ‘pesky beaks’!
Come join us for the amazing winter roosting of the Jackdaws in Stratford Park. Local ecologist David Bullock will explain their habits and answer a few choice questions. Why are they so fussy about where they roost? Who makes the final decision? Adult Jackdaws are almost always in pairs, and you can pick them out even if they are flying in flocks of hundreds – a beautiful (albeit noisy) spectacle to behold.
Local ecologists from across the Stroud valleys will be phoning in to let us know how many Jackdaws are flying in and from where and when, so we can live-track their journey. Join us for a Citizen Science experiment in action!

A Stroud Safari
Join Project Officer Tamsin for this rescheduled autumnal stroll along the canal, taking in the seasonal wildlife and discussing how we can encourage it into our gardens.

Festive Printing Workshop - BOOKINGS CLOSED
Get crafty and make your own unique festive cards with linocutter extraordinaire Sophie DeNofrio.
Design your card, decide on a print and colours, then craft your own linocut block to create beautiful seasonal cards to take home.

Autumn Adventures 2023
Join Stroud Valleys Project and the Museum in the Park for this year’s spooktacular autumn adventures!
As well as our family favourite carved pumpkin competition and trail, you can go on a self-guided tree trail around the park’s arboretum, flex your creative muscles with some bats, hats and hedgehog crafts in the Museum, make a pumpkin puppet, or listen to some autumnal storytelling.
You can drop off your carved pumpkins between 2pm and 5pm so that they can be added to our pumpkin trail and entered into the competition. There will be prizes for the best Primary, 11 plus, and family entrants.
This is a completely free event and is suitable for all ages. There is no need to book, just drop in at the Museum in the Park anytime between 1pm and 6pm. Donations for the Museum in the Park and Stroud Valleys Project welcomed.
The full schedule for the day is:
· 1pm to 6pm – Self-guided tree trail of the arboretum
· 2pm to 5pm – Drop off your carved pumpkins
· 2pm to 5pm – Bats and Hats crafts (for a donation)
· 2pm to 5pm – Hedgehog Leaf crafts
· 5pm to 5.30pm – Pumpkin puppets
· 5pm to 5.30pm – Torchlit tour of the Musuem
· 5pm to 5.30pm – Pumpkin judging takes place
· 5.30pm to 6pm – Pumpkin trail plus mulled apple juice (for a donation)
· 6pm – Pumpkin competition winners announced

Parkland Fungi Treasure Hunt
Join us for an autumn fungi treasure hunt, as we kick off our Stratford Park Autumn Adventures!
Autumn is a great time to spot some of the weird and wonderful fungi that lurk amongst the leaves on the woodland floor. Don your wellies and walking boots, get outside and enjoy some time seeking out these fascinating treasures.
Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.
